What is the NRL salary cap?

You might be wondering what is the NRL salary cap and how it relates to your own earnings. The NRL salary cap is a limit on the total amount each club can spend on player salaries for a season. It is set by the NRL and changes from year to year. For the most current figure, you should refer to official NRL announcements. This cap is a team-level restriction, not a fixed individual salary. Player pay varies widely depending on experience, position, and contract negotiations.

For most Australian employees, your take-home pay is determined by your gross salary, income tax, and the Medicare levy. Understanding these deductions helps you plan your budget.

How your take-home pay is calculated

Income tax rates for 2026-27

The Australian Taxation Office publishes tax tables that employers use to withhold the correct amount from your pay. For the 2026-27 income year, the rates for residents are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

These rates do not include the Medicare levy. The Medicare levy is an additional 2% of your taxable income, though lower-income earners may have a reduced or zero levy. The latest published single-person Medicare thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is phased in at 10c per $1 over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%.

Example: take-home pay on the minimum wage

The national minimum wage is $26.44 an hour and $1,004.90 a week (based on a 38-hour week). That works out to an annual salary of $52,255 (rounded). Using the 2026-27 tax rates:

  • Tax on $52,255: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000 = $4,020 + ($7,255 × 0.30) = $4,020 + $2,176.50 = $6,196.50
  • Medicare levy: 2% of $52,255 = $1,045.10
  • Total deductions: $6,196.50 + $1,045.10 = $7,241.60
  • Take-home pay: $52,255 – $7,241.60 = $45,013.40 per year, or about $865.64 per week

This is an estimate. Your actual withholding may differ if you claim the tax-free threshold, have tax offsets, or have study loan repayments.

Super is separate

Employers must pay superannuation at 12% of your ordinary earnings from 1 July 2026, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from your take-home pay. When you see a job ad that says "$80,000 plus super", the super is extra. If the ad says "$80,000 including super", your take-home pay is based on the salary component after super is subtracted.
