Your Fortnightly Pay: Beyond the Hays Salary Guide 2026 PDF

When you look at the Hays Salary Guide 2026 PDF, you see market rates for hundreds of roles. But the figure that lands in your bank account each fortnight is shaped by three things: the tax brackets you fall into, the Medicare levy, and how superannuation is quoted. This guide walks you through each factor so you can estimate your take-home pay with confidence.

Tax Brackets for 2026–27

The Australian Taxation Office publishes updated withholding schedules each year. For the 2026–27 income year, the resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

These are progressive rates. Your first $18,200 is tax-free. The next $26,800 is taxed at 15%, and so on. Your employer uses these brackets to calculate PAYG withholding each fortnight. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) can reduce your tax further if you earn under $66,667, but it cannot reduce your tax below zero.

The Medicare Levy and Its Thresholds

Most workers pay the Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. However, low-income earners get a break. The latest ATO single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013.

  • If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy.
  • Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is shaded: you pay 10c for every dollar over $28,011.
  • Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%.

For a full-time worker on the national minimum wage (see Minimum wage), your annual income is about $52,255, so you pay the full 2% Medicare levy. That’s $1,045 a year, or about $40 a fortnight.

Superannuation: The 12% Rule

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12%. This is money your employer pays into your super fund – it is not deducted from your take-home pay unless your salary is advertised as “including super”.

  • Salary plus super: Your base salary is the figure in the Hays guide. Super is on top. Your take-home is calculated from the base salary.
  • Salary including super: The total package includes both salary and super. Your base salary is lower, so your take-home is less.

Always check how a job ad quotes the salary. The Take-home pay topic explains the difference.

Putting It Together: A Fortnightly Example

Let’s use the national minimum wage as a benchmark. Fair Work sets it at $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week from 1 July 2026. That’s about $52,255 a year.

  • Tax on $52,255 (using 2026–27 rates): $4,020 + 30c for every dollar over $45,000 = $4,020 + $2,176.50 = $6,196.50.
  • Medicare levy: $52,255 × 2% = $1,045.10.
  • Total deductions: $7,241.60.
  • Annual take-home: $45,013.40.
  • Fortnightly take-home: about $1,731.

If you earn more, your marginal rate increases. For example, on the average full-time ordinary time earnings of $108,352 (ABS), your tax is $31,020 + 37c per $1 over $135,000? Wait, $108,352 is below $135,000, so it’s $4,020 + 30c per $1 over $45,000 = $4,020 + $19,005.60 = $23,025.60. Medicare is $2,167.04. Take-home: $83,159.36, or about $3,198 a fortnight.

Why the Hays Salary Guide 2026 PDF Matters

The Hays guide gives you the market rate for your role. But your actual fortnightly pay depends on the factors above. Use the guide to negotiate your base salary, then apply the tax and Medicare rules to see what you’ll actually receive. For a more precise estimate, check the Tax and Medicare page.

Remember: this is an estimate, not a tax assessment. Your actual withholding may vary due to HELP/HECS, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary sacrifice. Always refer to the ATO’s tax tables for exact amounts.

Questions

How is the Medicare levy calculated on my fortnightly pay?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. If your taxable income is below $28,011 (single), you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, the levy is reduced by 10 cents for every dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. Your employer withholds this from each pay period using ATO tax tables.

Does the Hays Salary Guide 2026 PDF include tax and super?

No, the Hays guide typically quotes base salaries before tax and before employer super contributions. Your take-home pay is the amount after income tax and the Medicare levy are deducted. Super is additional unless the salary is advertised as 'including super'.

What is the difference between salary plus super and salary including super?

Salary plus super means the employer pays super on top of your base salary. Salary including super means the total package includes both salary and super, so your base salary is lower. For example, a $100,000 package including super at 12% means your base salary is about $89,286 and super is $10,714.
