Gross Salary vs Take-Home Pay

When you see a UQ academic salary advertised, it is the gross annual figure before tax and the Medicare levy. Your take-home pay – the amount that reaches your bank account each fortnight – will be lower. This guide explains the difference and helps you estimate your after-tax income.

UQ Academic Salary Schedules (Effective 11 July 2026)

The University of Queensland publishes detailed salary schedules under its Enterprise Agreement 2021–2026. For example:

  • Level A (Associate Lecturer): $85,373 (A1) to $113,660 (A8)
  • Level B (Lecturer): $119,463 (B1) to $141,545 (B6)
  • Level C (Senior Lecturer): $145,962 (C1) to $168,044 (C6)
  • Level D (Associate Professor): $171,965 (D1) to $189,285 (D4)
  • Level E (Professor): $225,458

These rates are significantly above the minimum award rates set by the Fair Work Ombudsman, which start at $68,991 for Level A1. The UQ rates reflect the university's enterprise agreement.

What About Super?

Your total employment package includes superannuation. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your gross salary. For a Level B6 on $141,545, that adds $16,985 in employer contributions. However, super is paid into your fund, not your bank account. When comparing job offers, check whether the salary is quoted as "plus super" or "including super." UQ quotes the gross salary, and super is additional.

Estimating Your Take-Home Pay

For the 2026–27 tax year, the Australian Tax Office applies these rates to residents:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c per $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c per $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c per $1 over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c per $1 over $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (full rate applies as all UQ academic salaries exceed $35,013). The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) phases out above $66,667, so most academics receive no LITO.

Example: Level B6 ($141,545)

  • Income tax: $33,442
  • Medicare levy: $2,831
  • Total deductions: $36,273
  • Annual take-home: $105,272
  • Fortnightly take-home: $4,049

Example: Level A8 ($113,660)

  • Income tax: $24,648
  • Medicare levy: $2,273
  • Total deductions: $26,921
  • Annual take-home: $86,739
  • Fortnightly take-home: $3,336

These are estimates only. Your actual take-home may differ due to HELP/HECS repayments, salary packaging, or the Medicare levy surcharge.

Common Mix-Ups

  • Gross salary vs package: Your package includes super; your take-home does not.
  • Award vs enterprise agreement: UQ pays above the national award. Check your specific level.
  • Fortnightly pay: UQ pays fortnightly. The schedules show both annual and fortnightly rates.

Key Benchmarks

The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week. The average full-time adult ordinary time earnings are $2,083.70 per week. Your UQ academic salary will be well above these benchmarks.

Remember: the figures on your contract are gross. Plan your budget based on your after-tax take-home, not the headline number.

Questions

What is the difference between gross salary and total package for a UQ academic?

Your gross salary is the annual figure you see in your employment contract, such as $141,545 for a Level B6. The total package includes your gross salary plus the employer's superannuation contribution (12% from 1 July 2026). For that Level B6, the package would be about $158,530. However, your take-home pay is only from the gross salary after income tax and the Medicare levy are deducted. Super is paid into your fund and is not part of your bank account.

How is the Medicare levy applied to my UQ academic salary?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. For 2026–27, the latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your UQ academic salary is above $35,013 (which all full-time academic salaries are), you pay the full 2%. For example, on a gross salary of $100,000, the Medicare levy would be $2,000. There is no reduction for higher incomes.

How much super will I receive as a UQ academic?

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your gross salary, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. Your UQ salary schedule shows the annual rate before super. For instance, a Level C1 at $145,962 would receive $17,515 in employer super contributions per year. This is paid into your nominated super fund and is not included in your take-home pay.
