Understand your take-home pay with our take home pay calculator Australia

When you work in Australia, your employer pays you a salary that may be quoted as a yearly figure or an hourly rate. What actually reaches your bank account is your take-home pay after income tax and the Medicare levy. The Take-home pay guide explains how to estimate that figure.

How the tax system works for 2026–27

The Australian Taxation Office sets tax brackets. For 2026–27:

  • First $18,200: no tax.
  • $18,201 to $45,000: 15c per $1 over $18,200.
  • $45,001 to $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c per $1 over $45,000.
  • $135,001 to $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c per $1 over $135,000.
  • Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c per $1 over $190,000.

A low-income tax offset (LITO) can reduce tax up to $700. It phases out between $37,500 and $45,000, then again from $45,000 to $66,667. It never creates a refund.

Medicare levy and thresholds

You pay the Medicare levy at 2% of taxable income. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is below $28,011 you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013 you pay 10c per dollar over $28,011. Above $35,013 you pay the full 2%. Full-time salaries usually pay the full 2%.

Compare with benchmarks

Our Benchmarks page shows the national minimum wage from Fair Work: $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week. The annualised figure is $52,255. The full-time adult ordinary time earnings from ABS average weekly total earnings is $1,579 per week ($82,118 annualised). Full-time ordinary time earnings is $2,083.70 per week ($108,352 annualised.

Super is separate

Super is 12% from 1 July 2026, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. If your job ad says 'plus super', the super is added on top of your salary. The [Super](/topics/super] guide explains. The calculator does not deduct super from your take-home.

Use the calculator

Enter your taxable income into our take home pay calculator Australia to see your estimated after-tax amount. The calculator uses the tax brackets, Medicare levy, and LITO. It is an estimate, not a tax assessment. It excludes HELP/HECS, Medicare levy surcharge, salary sacrifice, and payroll rounding.

What about fortnightly pay?

If you are paid fortnightly, your weekly pay is your annual salary divided by 26. The calculator can show your fortnight take-home.

Final note

This guide uses the on-site reference only. No other sources. The figures are from the Australian Taxation Office and Fair Work. The minimum wage is $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week. The Medicare thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. The tax rates are for 2026–27.

Questions

How does the Medicare levy affect my take-home pay?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. If your taxable income is below $28,011 (single lower threshold), you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,001 you pay 10 cents per dollar over $28,011, and at $35,013 or above you pay the full 2%. Full-time salaries usually pay the full 2%.

What is the national minimum wage in 2026–27?

Fair Work sets the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week. The annualised figure is $52,255. This is the legal floor for most employees.

Does the calculator include super?

The take home pay calculator Australia estimates after income tax and Medicare levy. Super is not deducted from your take-home if your job ad says 'plus super'. The calculator uses the 12% super rate from 1 July 2026, but it does not reduce your take-home amount.
