Understanding Your Support Coordinator Salary

If you work as a support coordinator in Australia, your pay is likely set by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS Award). This guide explains how to estimate the amount that reaches your bank account after income tax and the Medicare levy. We use the latest award rates and the 2026–27 tax year.

Award Rates for Support Coordinators

The SCHADS Award classifies support coordinators at different levels depending on experience and responsibilities. For example, a Level 4 employee (pay point 1) earns a minimum of $1,119.10 per week, or $29.45 per hour. A Level 5 employee (pay point 2) earns at least $1,541.90 per week, or $40.58 per hour. These rates apply from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 December 2026, as published by Fair Work.

Your actual support coordinator salary may be higher than the minimum, depending on your employer and any enterprise agreements. Always check your pay slip against the award classification.

From Gross Pay to Take-Home Pay

Once you know your annual salary, you can estimate your take-home pay by subtracting income tax and the Medicare levy. The Australian tax system for residents uses progressive rates. For the 2026–27 year:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil tax
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15 cents for each dollar over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30 cents for each dollar over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37 cents for each dollar over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45 cents for each dollar over $190,000

You may also be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO). For taxable incomes up to $37,500, the offset is $700. It reduces by 5 cents per dollar up to $45,000, then by 1.5 cents per dollar up to $66,667. LITO can only reduce your tax to zero.

Example: Level 4 Support Coordinator

Annual salary: $1,119.10 × 52 weeks = $58,193.20.

  • Tax on $58,193.20: $4,020 + 0.30 × ($58,193.20 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $3,957.96 = $7,977.96
  • LITO: $325 – 0.015 × ($58,193.20 – $45,000) = $325 – $197.90 = $127.10
  • Tax after LITO: $7,977.96 – $127.10 = $7,850.86
  • Medicare levy (full 2%): $1,163.86
  • Total deductions: $9,014.72
  • Take-home pay: $49,178.48 per year, or about $1,891.48 per fortnight

This is an estimate. Your actual tax may differ if you have HELP/HECS debt, salary sacrifice, or other adjustments.

Medicare Levy Thresholds

The latest published single-person Medicare thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay 10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, the full 2% applies. Full-time support coordinators earning above $35,013 will pay the full 2%.

Superannuation Is Extra

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. If your job ad says “$60,000 plus super”, your take-home pay is based on $60,000, and your employer contributes an additional $7,200 to your super fund.

Benchmarks for Context

The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week (from 1 July 2026). The average full-time adult ordinary time earnings are $2,083.70 per week, according to the ABS. Your support coordinator salary may fall between these figures depending on your level.

Final Notes

Always check your pay against the SCHADS Award and your employment contract. If you are unsure about your classification, ask your employer or contact Fair Work. This guide provides an estimate only and is not a tax assessment.

Questions

What award covers support coordinators?

Support coordinators are typically covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS Award). Your classification level determines your minimum pay rate.

How is the Medicare levy calculated on my support coordinator salary?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. If your taxable income is below $28,011 (single), no levy applies. Between $28,011 and $35,013, a shading rate of 10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold applies. Above $35,013, the full 2% is payable.

No. Superannuation is paid on top of your salary at 12% from 1 July 2026. If your job advertisement says 'plus super', the super amount is not deducted from your take-home pay.
