Your software developer salary: what changes your fortnight after tax and Medicare

If you're a software developer in Australia, understanding what lands in your bank account each fortnight means looking past the headline figure. The key factors are the income tax brackets, the Medicare levy, and superannuation. This guide uses the latest public data to show how a typical software developer salary translates into take-home pay.

The median software developer salary

According to Jobs and Skills Australia, the median full-time weekly earnings for Software and Applications Programmers (including analyst programmers, developer programmers, software engineers, and testers) are $2,496 per week before tax. That works out to roughly $129,792 per year (assuming 52 weeks). The median hourly rate is $64, and 94% work full-time. This figure is a reliable benchmark for a mid-level software developer salary.

How tax brackets affect your fortnight

The Australian Taxation Office publishes the 2026–27 resident tax rates. For a taxable income of $129,792, you fall into the $45,001–$135,000 bracket. The tax calculation is:

  • First $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 to $45,000: 15c per dollar over $18,200 = $4,020
  • $45,001 to $129,792: 30c per dollar over $45,000 = $25,437.60

Total tax before offsets = $4,020 + $25,437.60 = $29,457.60.

That's the tax before the Medicare levy and any offsets. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) does not apply at this income level.

The Medicare levy: another 2%

Most residents pay the Medicare levy at 2% of taxable income. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. Since $129,792 is well above $35,013, you pay the full 2%: $2,595.84.

So total tax plus Medicare = $29,457.60 + $2,595.84 = $32,053.44.

Superannuation: not deducted from your salary (usually)

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12%. If your job advertisement says "$129,792 plus super", the employer pays an additional 12% ($15,575) into your super fund. Your take-home pay is calculated on the base salary. However, if you choose to salary sacrifice extra super, that reduces your taxable income and therefore your tax and Medicare levy, but also reduces your cash pay. For the standard case, super does not change your fortnightly bank deposit.

Your fortnightly take-home

Divide the annual salary by 26 fortnights:

  • Gross per fortnight: $129,792 / 26 = $4,992
  • Tax per fortnight: $29,457.60 / 26 = $1,133.75
  • Medicare per fortnight: $2,595.84 / 26 = $99.84
  • Net per fortnight: $4,992 - $1,133.75 - $99.84 = $3,758.41

This is an estimate. It excludes HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge (if you don't have appropriate private hospital cover and earn above the surcharge threshold), and any salary packaging. The actual amount may vary slightly due to payroll tax-table rounding.

What if your software developer salary is different?

If you earn less or more, the same principles apply. Use the Take-home pay calculator on this site to see your own numbers. The tax brackets for 2026–27 are:

Taxable income Tax on this income
0 – $18,200 Nil
$18,201 – $45,000 15c for each $1 over $18,200
$45,001 – $135,000 $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
$135,001 – $190,000 $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
$190,001 and over $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

Plus the 2% Medicare levy.

Other factors that change your fortnight

  • Salary packaging: If you package a car or other benefits, your taxable income drops, reducing tax and Medicare. See Salary packaging.
  • HELP/HECS debt: Repayments are calculated on your income and deducted by your employer. This can reduce your take-home by several hundred dollars per fortnight.
  • Medicare levy surcharge: If you earn above $93,000 (single) and don't have appropriate hospital cover, you pay an extra 1% to 1.5%.
  • Super guarantee: While not deducted from your cash pay, it's a key part of your total remuneration. Learn more about Super.

Summary

A typical software developer earning the median $2,496 per week can expect around $3,758 per fortnight after income tax and the Medicare levy, assuming no other deductions. The exact amount depends on your specific circumstances, but the brackets and levy are the main drivers. For a personalised estimate, use the Clearance tool.

Questions

How is the Medicare levy calculated on my software developer salary?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. For the 2026–27 year, full-time salaries are above the single thresholds ($28,011 and $35,013), so you pay the full 2%. There is a shading rate of 10c per dollar between the lower and upper thresholds, but most developers earning the median $2,496 per week ($129,792 annualised) will pay the full 2%.

What is the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) and does it apply to me?

LITO reduces your tax by up to $700 if your taxable income is $37,500 or less. It phases out completely by $66,667. For a software developer earning the median salary, your income is well above that, so LITO does not apply. It only helps lower-income earners.

Does superannuation come out of my take-home pay?

No, if your job advertisement says 'plus super', the employer pays the 12% super guarantee on top of your salary. Your take-home pay is calculated from your base salary before super. However, if you salary sacrifice into super, that reduces your taxable income and therefore your tax and Medicare levy, but also reduces the cash you receive each fortnight.
