What your NSW Police salary really means

When you see a figure like “NSW Police salary $88,169”, it’s easy to assume that’s what lands in your bank account. But the number you see on a job ad or award table is usually a loaded salary – it includes base pay plus some allowances and shift penalties. Your actual take-home pay is what remains after the Australian Taxation Office deducts income tax and the Medicare levy. Superannuation is also separate: if the salary is quoted as “plus super”, the 12% super guarantee (from 1 July 2026) is paid on top, not taken out of your pocket.

This guide walks you through the current NSW Police salary scales, explains the difference between gross, package, and take-home, and shows you how to estimate your fortnightly pay.

Current NSW Police salary scales

According to NSW Police Recruitment, the annual loaded salaries for non-commissioned officers are:

  • Probationary Constable: $88,169
  • Constable Level 2: $91,496
  • Constable Level 3: $94,820
  • Constable Level 4: $98,143
  • Constable Level 5: $99,811

These figures include shift loadings and some allowances. Under a recent four-year agreement accepted by the Police Association of NSW, starting salaries are set to increase further – for example, the Probationary Constable starting salary (including loading) will rise from $84,777 to $97,206 by 2027. The current $88,169 figure reflects the 2024 award rates.

Gross salary vs. package vs. take-home

Gross salary is the total amount you earn before any deductions. For a Probationary Constable, that’s $88,169 a year.

Package often includes superannuation and other benefits. If your employer quotes a “total package” of, say, $98,749, that might be $88,169 salary plus $10,580 super (12% of $88,169). But the NSW Police Recruitment site lists the salary as “annual loaded salary” and separately mentions “plus superannuation and allowances”, so the $88,169 is your gross cash salary before super.

Take-home pay is what you actually receive after income tax and the Medicare levy. It’s the amount that hits your bank account each fortnight.

Estimating your take-home pay

Let’s use the Probationary Constable salary of $88,169 for the 2026–27 tax year. The tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000

Your taxable income is $88,169. Tax calculation:

  • First $18,200: $0
  • Next $26,800 ($18,201 to $45,000): $4,020
  • Remaining $43,169 ($45,001 to $88,169): $12,950.70
  • Total tax: $16,970.70

The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) phases out completely at this income, so you get $0 offset.

Medicare levy: 2% of $88,169 = $1,763.38

Total deductions: $16,970.70 + $1,763.38 = $18,734.08

Annual take-home: $88,169 – $18,734.08 = $69,434.92

Fortnightly take-home: $69,434.92 ÷ 26 = $2,670.57

This is an estimate only. It excludes HELP/HECS repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, salary sacrifice, and payroll rounding. For a more precise figure, use the Take-home pay calculator on this site.

How the Medicare levy applies

The Medicare levy is a flat 2% for most taxpayers. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If your taxable income is below $28,011, you pay no levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay a reduced rate (10c per $1 over the lower threshold). Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. Since a Probationary Constable earns well above $35,013, the full levy applies.

Superannuation is extra

Your NSW Police salary is quoted before super. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% on your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. That means your employer pays an additional $10,580 into your super fund each year (based on $88,169). This money is not part of your take-home pay – it’s invested for retirement. See Super for more.

Allowances and progression

The loaded salary already includes typical shift penalties. You may also receive additional allowances for remote area work, operations, or incidental expenses, as outlined in the Crown Employees (Police Officers – 2024) Award. These are paid on top and are taxable. Your take-home will increase if you work overtime or receive specialist allowances.

Salary progression is automatic: you move up the constable levels each year, reaching Senior Constable faster under the new agreement (10 years instead of 16). Each step adds roughly $3,300 to $3,400 to your loaded salary, which boosts your take-home accordingly.

Common mix-ups

  • “Salary package” vs. “take-home” – A package that includes super is not the same as cash in hand. Always check whether the figure is “plus super” or “including super”.
  • “Loaded salary” – This already includes some allowances, so don’t double-count shift penalties.
  • “Fortnightly pay” – Your employer withholds tax and Medicare each pay period. The amount you see on your payslip is after those deductions, not before.

Questions

What is the take-home pay for a Probationary Constable on the NSW Police salary scale?

Using the 2026–27 tax rates and the loaded salary of $88,169, your estimated annual take-home after income tax and the full Medicare levy (2%) is about $69,435. That works out to roughly $2,670 per fortnight. This excludes any salary packaging, HELP repayments, or the Medicare levy surcharge.

How does the Medicare levy affect my NSW Police salary?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. Since a Probationary Constable’s salary is well above the single upper threshold of $35,013, you pay the full 2%. For the $88,169 salary, that’s $1,763 a year. The levy is withheld from your pay along with income tax.

What allowances are included in the loaded NSW Police salary figures?

The annual loaded salary shown on the NSW Police Recruitment site includes base pay plus typical shift penalties and allowances. For example, the Probationary Constable figure of $88,169 already includes some shift loading. Additional allowances (e.g., remote area, operations) may be paid on top, and superannuation is extra.
