Understanding your pay: net salary calculator australia for gross, package, and take-home
Your take-home pay depends on your gross salary, whether super is included in the package, and your tax situation.
Gross salary, package, and take-home: what you actually receive
When you see a job advertisement, the figure quoted is often your gross salary – the amount before any deductions. But many ads also mention a total package, which includes employer super contributions. Your take-home pay is what lands in your bank account after income tax and the Medicare levy are withheld. This guide explains the differences and helps you use our net salary calculator australia to estimate your after-tax amount.
Gross salary vs total package
Your gross salary is your base earnings. For example, the national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 an hour and $1,004.90 a week, according to Fair Work. That’s your gross weekly pay. If you’re full-time, your annual gross salary might be around $52,255 (the minimum wage annualised).
A total package adds the super guarantee – 12% from 1 July 2026 – on top of your gross salary. So if your gross is $80,000, the package would be $80,000 plus $9,600 super = $89,600. But you never see that super in your bank account; it goes into your super fund. Your take-home is calculated only from the $80,000 gross salary.
How tax and Medicare reduce your gross
Australia uses a progressive tax system for residents. For 2026-27, the rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15c for each dollar over $18,200 up to $45,000
- $4,020 plus 30c per dollar over $45,000 up to $135,000
- $31,020 plus 37c per dollar over $135,000 up to $190,000
- $51,370 plus 45c per dollar over $190,000
You also pay the Medicare levy – 2% of your taxable income – unless you’re below the thresholds. The latest published single-person thresholds are $28,011 (lower) and $35,013 (upper). If you earn between those amounts, you pay a reduced levy of 10c per dollar over $28,011. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%.
Additionally, you may be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO). For 2026-27, the maximum LITO is $700, which phases out between $37,500 and $66,667. It can only reduce your tax to zero – no refund.
Example: minimum wage take-home
Let’s say you earn the minimum wage: $1,004.90 per week, or $52,255 annually. Using the tax rates:
- Tax on $52,255: $4,020 + 30c × ($52,255 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $2,176.50 = $6,196.50
- Medicare levy: full 2% = $1,045.10 (since $52,255 > $35,013)
- LITO: at $52,255, you’re above $45,000, so LITO = $325 – 1.5c × ($52,255 – $45,000) = $325 – $108.83 = $216.17
- Total deductions: $6,196.50 + $1,045.10 – $216.17 = $7,025.43
- Annual take-home: $52,255 – $7,025.43 = $45,229.57
- Weekly take-home: about $869.80
This is an estimate – your actual pay may vary due to rounding and other factors.
Example: average full-time earnings
The ABS reports average full-time adult ordinary time earnings at $2,083.70 per week, or $108,352 annually (May 2026, seasonally adjusted). For that gross:
- Tax: $31,020 + 37c × ($108,352 – $135,000) – but wait, $108,352 is below $135,000, so use the previous bracket: $4,020 + 30c × ($108,352 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $19,005.60 = $23,025.60
- Medicare: 2% = $2,167.04
- LITO: at $108,352 you’re above $66,667, so no LITO.
- Total deductions: $25,192.64
- Annual take-home: $83,159.36
- Weekly: about $1,599.22
Remember, these figures exclude HELP/HECS, the Medicare levy surcharge, salary sacrifice, and payroll rounding.

Common mix-ups to avoid
- Package vs salary: If a job ad says “$90,000 package”, ask whether that includes super. Your take-home will be based on the salary part only.
- Super is not take-home: Even though the super guarantee is part of your total remuneration, it’s not available for everyday spending.
- Medicare levy vs surcharge: The levy is for everyone; the surcharge applies only if you don’t have appropriate private hospital cover and earn above a certain threshold. This guide covers only the levy.

Questions
What is the difference between gross salary and total package?
Gross salary is your base pay before tax and super. Total package includes your salary plus employer super contributions (currently 12% from 1 July 2026). Your take-home is only from the salary component after tax and Medicare.
How do I calculate my take-home pay?
Subtract income tax (using the 2026-27 rates: nil up to $18,200, then 15c per $1 to $45,000, etc.) and the 2% Medicare levy (full rate if you earn over $35,013 as a single). You may also be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) up to $700. Use our net salary calculator australia for a quick estimate.
What is the Medicare levy and how does it affect my pay?
The Medicare levy is a 2% tax on your taxable income to fund public healthcare. If you earn below $28,011 as a single, you pay none; between $28,011 and $35,013 you pay a reduced rate (10c per $1 over the lower threshold). Above $35,013 you pay the full 2%.
