Financial controller salary: What you take home after tax and Medicare
Financial controller salaries in Australia vary widely; typical figures around $180,000 in Sydney (Hays) and up to $350,000 for experienced roles in large companies (Byron Thomas).
Financial controller salary: What you take home after tax and Medicare
When you receive a job offer for a financial controller role, the headline salary is only part of the story. What matters is the amount that lands in your bank account each fortnight after income tax and the Medicare levy. This guide helps you compare offers by focusing on take-home pay.
Typical financial controller salary ranges
Financial controller salaries in Australia vary significantly by experience, company size, and location. The Hays Salary Guide FY26/27 lists a typical base salary of $180,000 for a financial controller in Sydney and New South Wales, before super. notes that ranges can run tens of thousands either side depending on your organisation and skills.
Byron Thomas’s 2026 Salary Guide provides more granular data. For a financial controller with 5+ years experience in a small-to-medium company (turnover under $200M), the range is $170,000–$250,000. In a large company ($200M+ turnover), the range is $200,000–$350,000. These figures are base salary only, excluding bonuses, vehicles, or stock options.
Glassdoor reports an average base pay of $145,000 for financial controllers, with a typical range of $129,250 to $200,000 (25th to 75th percentile). However, recent submissions show salaries up to $204,000 for experienced roles.
How to calculate your take-home pay
To estimate your after-tax pay, start with your annual base salary. For a financial controller earning $180,000 in 2026–27, the income tax calculation is:
- $0–$18,200: nil
- $18,201–$45,000: 15c per dollar = $4,020
- $45,001–$135,000: 30c per dollar = $27,000
- $135,001–$180,000: 37c per dollar = $16,650
- Total tax: $4,020 + $27,000 + $16,650 = $47,670
Add the Medicare levy: 2% of $180,000 = $3,600. The latest single-person Medicare thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. Full-time salaries above $35,013 pay the full 2%.
Total deductions: $47,670 + $3,600 = $51,270. Take-home pay: $180,000 – $51,270 = $128,730 per year, or about $4,951 per fortnight.
If your salary is higher, use the 2026–27 tax brackets: up to $190,000 at 37c per dollar, and above $190,000 at 45c per dollar. The low-income tax offset (LITO) does not apply at these income levels.
Comparing job offers: salary packaging and super
When comparing offers, check whether the salary is quoted as ‘plus super’ or ‘including super’. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% on a maximum contribution base of $270,830. If your offer is $180,000 plus super, the employer pays an additional $21,600 into your super fund, and your take-home is based on $180,000. If the offer is $180,000 including super, your base salary is about $160,714, and your take-home will be lower.
Also consider salary packaging options, such as novated leases or additional super contributions, which can reduce your taxable income. Use our Salary packaging guide to see how these affect your net pay.
Using take-home pay to evaluate offers
The best way to compare two financial controller job offers is to calculate the after-tax amount you will receive each fortnight. Our Take-home pay tool does this for you. Remember that the Medicare levy surcharge may apply if you do not have appropriate private hospital cover and your income exceeds $93,000 (single). This guide does not include that surcharge, so check your situation.

Questions
How do I calculate my take-home pay as a financial controller?
Start with your annual base salary. Subtract income tax using the 2026–27 resident rates: nil on the first $18,200, then 15c per dollar up to $45,000, 30c up to $135,000, 37c up to $190,000, and 45c above that. Then subtract the Medicare levy of 2% (full rate applies to salaries above $35,013). If your salary is quoted as 'plus super', super is not deducted from your take-home. Use our Take-home pay tool for a precise estimate.
What is the difference between a salary quoted 'plus super' and 'including super'?
A 'plus super' offer means the employer contributes 12% super on top of your base salary. Your take-home pay is calculated on the base. An 'including super' offer means the total package includes the super contribution, so your base salary is lower. Always confirm which wording is used in your contract to compare offers fairly.
How does company size affect financial controller salary?
According to the Hays Salary Guide, company turnover is the single biggest factor. Larger companies typically pay higher bands for the same role. Byron Thomas data shows financial controllers with 5+ years experience earn $170,000–$250,000 in small-to-medium firms (turnover under $200M) and $200,000–$350,000 in large firms ($200M+). Sector also matters: banking and financial services often pay a premium.
