What is the average salary aus?

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 in May 2026. That works out to $108,352 a year – a common benchmark when people talk about the average salary aus. For all employees (including part-time), the average weekly total earnings were $1,579.20, or about $82,118 annually. These figures exclude employer super contributions.

But the number that lands in your bank account each fortnight is quite different. Three things change it: the tax brackets you fall into, the Medicare levy, and how super is handled.

How tax brackets affect your fortnight

For the 2026–27 tax year, the Australian Tax Office applies these resident rates:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

On the average salary aus of $108,352, your tax is:

  • First $18,200: $0
  • Next $26,800 ($18,201 to $45,000): $4,020
  • Remaining $63,352 ($45,001 to $108,352) at 30c: $19,005.60
  • Total tax: $23,025.60 per year

That's about $885 per fortnight taken out for tax alone. The Low Income Tax Offset doesn't apply at this income level.

The Medicare levy's impact

Most residents pay the Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. For the average salary aus, that's $2,167.04 per year, or $83 per fortnight. If you're single and earn below $28,011, you pay nothing; between $28,011 and $35,013 you pay a reduced rate (10c per dollar over the lower threshold). Full-time workers on the average salary pay the full 2%.

Superannuation and your take-home

Super is not deducted from your take-home pay if your salary is advertised as 'plus super'. The 12% super guarantee (from 1 July 2026) is paid on top by your employer. However, if you salary-sacrifice extra super, that reduces your taxable income and therefore your take-home. For the typical employee, super does not change the fortnightly amount that reaches your bank account.

Putting it all together: an example

Take the average full-time salary of $108,352. Your gross fortnightly pay (26 fortnights) is $4,167. After income tax ($885) and Medicare ($83), your net fortnightly take-home is $3,199. That's before any salary packaging, HELP repayments, or Medicare levy surcharge.

If you earn the national minimum wage of $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week, $52,255 per year), your tax is lower and you may qualify for the Low Income Tax Offset. Your fortnightly net would be roughly $1,700.

Remember: these are estimates. Use the Take-home pay guide for your exact situation, and check the Tax and Medicare page for the latest thresholds.

Questions

How much tax will I pay on the average salary?

On a full-time average ordinary time earnings of $108,352, your 2026–27 income tax (excluding Medicare) is approximately $23,026. That's $4,020 on the first $45,000 plus 30c for each dollar over $45,000 up to $108,352. The Low Income Tax Offset does not apply at this income.

Does the Medicare levy reduce my fortnightly pay?

Yes. The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income. On $108,352, that's $2,167 per year, or about $83 per fortnight. If your income is below $28,011 (single) you pay no levy; between $28,011 and $35,013 you pay a reduced rate.

How does super affect my take-home pay?

If your salary is quoted as 'plus super', the 12% super guarantee is paid on top and does not reduce your take-home. If your salary is 'including super', then super is deducted from your gross before tax, lowering your taxable income and take-home. Most job ads are 'plus super'.
