Understanding Your Australia Average Salary: What Reaches Your Bank Account After Tax
Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus income tax and the Medicare levy, which you can estimate using the 2026-27 tax rates and thresholds provided by the Australian Taxation Office.
How to Estimate Your Take-Home Pay
When you see a salary figure, it is usually the gross amount before tax, the Medicare levy, and superannuation. Your take-home pay is what actually reaches your bank account after these deductions. This guide uses the 2026-27 tax rates and thresholds from the Australian Taxation Office to help you work out your after-tax income.
Income Tax Brackets for 2026-27
For Australian residents, the tax rates are progressive. You pay no tax on the first $18,200 you earn. Then:
- $18,201 to $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 to $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 to $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
After calculating the tax, you may be eligible for the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO). The maximum LITO is $700 for incomes up to $37,500, then reduces gradually until $66,667. For example, on $52,255 the LITO is about $216.
The Medicare Levy
The Medicare levy is a separate 2% charge to fund public health. For singles, if you earn less than $28,011 you pay nothing. Between $28,011 and $35,013 you pay 10c per $1 over $28,011. Above $35,011 you pay full 2%. For the minimum wage annual of $52,255 the levy is $1,045.
Using the australia average salary benchmarks
The After-tax salary page provides benchmarks from Fair Work Ombudsman and the ABS. The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour and $1,004.90 per week. The all employees average weekly total earnings is $1,579.20 per week ($82,118 per year. The full-time adult ordinary time earnings is $2,083.70 per week ($108,352 per year). These are gross figures. To estimate take-home, apply the tax and levy.
For example, on $108,352 (full-time ordinary time):
- Tax: $31,020 plus 30c per $1 over $45,000 = $31,020 + ($108,352 - $45,000) * 0.30 = $31,020 + $63,352 * 0.30 = $31,020 + $19,005 = $50,025? Wait, recalc: $108,352 - $45,000 = $63,352 * 0.30 = $19,005.6, plus $4,020 = $23,025.6. Then LITO: For $108,352, it's above $66,667, so LITO is $0? Actually LITO for over $66,667 is nil? The reference says LITO can only reduce tax to zero. For $108,352, it's above $66,667, so no LITO. Then Medicare: 2% of $108,352 = $2,167.04. Total deductions = $23,025.6 + $2,167.04 = $25,192.64. Take-home = $108,352 - $25,192.64 = $83,159.36 per year, about $3,198 per week.
Superannuation
Employer super contributions are 12% from 1 July 2026, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your take-home pay if the salary is quoted as 'plus super'. Always check whether a job advertisement includes super in the figure.

Questions
How do I calculate my income tax for 2026-27?
Use the resident tax brackets: no tax on the first $18,200, then 15c per $1 from $18,201 to $45,000, 30c per $1 from $45,001 to $135,000, 37c per $1 from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45c per $1 over $190,000. Then apply the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) which can reduce your tax to zero. For example, if your taxable income is $52,255 (the minimum wage annual equivalent), your tax before offsets is about $6,197, then LITO reduces it by about $216, giving a tax of about $5,980.
What is the Medicare levy and how does it affect my take-home pay?
The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income, but if you earn below $28,011 as a single person, you pay nothing. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay 10c per $1 over $28,011. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%. For the minimum wage annual of $52,255, the levy is $1,045. So total deductions (tax plus levy) are about $7,025, leaving take-home of about $45,230.
What is the take-home pay for someone earning the national minimum wage?
The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, or $52,255 per year (based on 38 hours per week, 52 weeks). After income tax (including LITO) and the Medicare levy, the estimated take-home pay is approximately $45,230 per year, or about $1,739 per week. This is a resident estimate and excludes HELP/HECS, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary sacrifice.
