Understanding Your Fortnightly Take-Home Pay

When you look at your payslip, the amount that lands in your bank account is your take-home pay after income tax and the Medicare levy. But how do tax brackets, the Medicare levy, and superannuation change what you see each fortnight? This guide explains the key factors using the latest 2026–27 rates from the Australian Taxation Office and Fair Work Ombudsman.

The Role of Tax Brackets

Australia uses a progressive tax system. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:

  • Up to $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 to $45,000: 15c per $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 to $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c per $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 to $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c per $1 over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: $51,370 plus 45c per $1 over $190,000

Your fortnightly tax withholding is based on your annual salary. For example, if you earn the national minimum wage of $26.44 an hour ($1,004.90 a week, or $52,255 a year), you fall into the second bracket. Your tax would be $4,020 plus 30c for every dollar over $45,000 – that’s $4,020 + 0.30 × ($52,255 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $2,176.50 = $6,196.50 per year. Divided by 26 fortnights, that’s about $238.33 per fortnight in tax. But you also get the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO), which can reduce your tax to zero if your taxable income is $37,500 or less, and phases out gradually. For the minimum wage earner, LITO would be $325 minus 1.5c per $1 over $45,000, so $325 – 0.015 × ($52,255 – $45,000) = $325 – $108.83 = $216.17. That reduces your tax to $6,196.50 – $216.17 = $5,980.33, or about $230 per fortnight.

The Medicare Levy’s Impact

The Medicare levy is an additional 2% on your taxable income, but it’s not applied to everyone. The latest published single-person Medicare thresholds are $28,011 and $35,013. If you earn below $28,011, you pay no Medicare levy. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay 10c per $1 over the lower threshold. Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%.

For the minimum wage earner ($52,255), the Medicare levy is 2% of $52,255 = $1,045.10 per year, or about $40.20 per fortnight. That’s added to your tax withholding. So your total deductions per fortnight would be roughly $230 (tax after LITO) + $40.20 (Medicare) = $270.20. Your take-home pay would be $1,004.90 – $270.20 = $734.70 per week, or about $1,469.40 per fortnight. But remember, this is a simplified estimate – your employer uses payroll tax tables that may round differently.

Superannuation and Your Take-Home

Superannuation is money your employer pays into your super fund. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Importantly, super is not deducted from your take-home pay if your salary is quoted as “plus super”. For example, a job ad offering $60,000 plus super means your employer pays $60,000 into your bank account (before tax) and an additional $7,200 into your super. Your take-home is calculated on the $60,000.

However, if your salary is quoted as a total package including super (e.g., $67,200 total), then the super component is deducted from your pay and sent to your super fund. In that case, your taxable income is lower, which reduces your tax and Medicare levy. Always check how your salary is advertised. For more details, see our guide on Take-home pay.

Using the ATO Salary Calculator

To get a precise estimate of your fortnightly take-home pay, you can use the ATO salary calculator on the Australian Taxation Office website. It accounts for your specific salary, tax brackets, LITO, Medicare levy, and any other factors like HELP/HECS debts or salary sacrifice. While our guide gives you a ballpark, the ATO salary calculator is the official tool for planning. Remember that this estimate is not a tax assessment – it excludes the Medicare levy surcharge, payroll tax-table rounding, and other adjustments. Putting It All Together

Your fortnightly pay changes based on three main factors:

  • Tax brackets: Higher earnings push you into higher marginal rates, increasing the tax withheld each fortnight.
  • Medicare levy: If you earn above $35,013, you pay the full 2%, which adds to your deductions.
  • Superannuation: Whether super is on top of or included in your salary affects your taxable income and thus your take-home.

For example, an employee earning the average full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week ($108,352 per year) would be in the 30% bracket (plus 2% Medicare). Their tax would be $4,020 + 0.30 × ($108,352 – $45,000) = $4,020 + $19,005.60 = $23,025.60. LITO is not available at that income. Medicare levy is $2,167.04. Total deductions: $25,192.64 per year, or about $969 per fortnight. Take-home: $2,083.70 – $969 = $1,114.70 per week, or $2,229.40 per fortnight. But again, use the ATO salary calculator for your exact situation.

Questions

How is the Medicare levy calculated on my pay?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income, but if you earn below $28,011 as a single, you pay nothing. Between $28,011 and $35,013, you pay a reduced rate (10 cents per dollar over the lower threshold). Above $35,013, you pay the full 2%.

Does superannuation reduce my take-home pay?

If your job ad says 'plus super', the super is on top of your salary and does not reduce your take-home. If your salary is quoted as a total package including super, then the super component is deducted from your pay and goes to your super fund, reducing your take-home.

How often do tax brackets change?

The Australian government may adjust tax brackets and thresholds each financial year. The rates shown here are for 2026–27. Always check the ATO website for the latest.
